What was the problem with this years E3? Were we expecting too much?
Almost a week has passed since this years E3. Ive read plenty of articles and blog post. Ive listened to just about everyone talk about it on the Podcast’s, Ive watched many of the videos available online. One thing that I seem to get from a lot of people is that many had a feeling of "meh". Some were claiming that E3 is dead. Some were claiming that it was dull and boring. Some was complaining about having to walk all over.
As I sat around during the week and read the news and watched the video’s I started to get the same feeling…the excitement is gone, they have ruined E3. It wasn’t until today that I realized that I was wrong.
Yea there were problems.
Yea the press had to walk all over.
Yea it was smaller.
Yea every Gamestop employee and small time blogger wasn’t allowed to go (which I actually got tickets 2 years in a row but never went, wish I had now).
The problem wasn’t really with E3. As I look at the coverage, there were plenty of games….Really good games. This holiday season will be a game packed holiday season. The problem was really that there werent anything shown that we didn’t already know about in one way or another. It was like watching a rerun. The last 2 years, we have been spoiled with all the Xbox 360 launch info one year, then the PS3 and Wii launch info the next. All of those systems are now out. The PS3 has pretty much been a flickering candle instead of the forest fire everyone thought it would be. The Wii, while fun and selling a lot of units, is really starting to disapoint many "gamers" with all the "softcore gaming". And the 360 is a Microsoft product….Nuff said…We all love to hate Microsoft and that is kind of hard to do when it comes to the 360 so we all just be quiet.
Most of the "really ground breaking, once a year, hot of the press" news of E3 really came as announcements of disappointments and confusion, not new products or games.
- The no brainer announcement for Microsoft would be to announce a price drop….No mention of that, but we do get to buy a ugly green and orange Halo3 360. and probably some of the worst news of all came right after E3 with the announcement of Peter Moore leaving Microsoft.
- The no brainer announcement for Sony would be to announce a price drop….They did, the 60 gig PS3 is now $100 bucks cheaper, and also there is going to be an 80 GIG PS3 for $599. But that price drop was just as quickly taken away as it was announced by news of Sony getting rid of the 60 gig PS3 at the end of the summer.
- Good ole Nintendo will save the day…well they tried. Introducing The zapper, a piece of plastic that connects your Wiimote and the nunchuck to form a gun. The Zapper does not deserve the hype its getting, not saying its bad or anything but it is an item that should come with a game, without any fanfare. McDonald’s should give it away in Happy Meals. Not announce it at E3. Its sortof like the president interrupting "24" to announce he got a new toothbrush case. Not a tooth brush, but the toothbrush case.
Now to be honest, none of these items are the companies fault. They all had plenty of really good looking games shown, we just all got spoiled and expected more. Maybe things are starting to get saturated a bit…"Shhh" no one wants to hear that.
Well the rumor now is next years E3 will be in Vegas. Maybe thats when we will hear our MEGATON announcements. Until then, all you gamers rejoice because this holiday season is going to be a good one.
