What dictates if a game’s graphics are next gen

Ive said it before, I like to play video games. I am a gamer in general, and really don’t lean towards PC gaming or Console gaming. I like gaming on both, I think both have their benefits. With me, its usually the type of games that I like to play not the platform. For example, years ago, I was really into FPS’s, then I became a MMORPG addict. The types of games I like changes from time to time.
Since I play games on both console and PC, I listen and read a lot of info about games on both platforms. There is a noticeable difference between the 2 when it comes to reading about them. What makes a game good, what is expected, even games geared towards the different platforms are made a little different from each other sometimes to cater to those differences in the gamers.
That game has Next Gen Graphics
Being that I play games on both PC and Console, that phrase always make me laugh. What is next gen graphics? Does what you see on consoles dictate when graphics can be called next gen?
The reason why It makes me laugh is if you look at it, over time game graphics get better looking. On the console side, developers learn more tricks on how to get more out of the console, and on the pc side, hardware gets better and allows games to have more graphical features. Yea on a console, it does get to a point where there is a limit to the improvement to graphics that are possible, but on the PC side, games continue to get better looking, theres not really a definite generation jump, games just get better looking.

Although now, a lot of PC game makers are making console games so there may not be as many examples as there use to be in the old days, but you still see it. theres always a gradual improvement to the graphics as time goes on. When you look at the Xbox 360, there is an obvious difference between Halo 2 and Gears of war, but if you flip to the PC side, there are games that fall in between, some were made years ago some were made more recently but the improvement was a gradual trend upwards. Oblivion for example was probably one of the first games to release on a console that was clamored to have next gen graphics. But on the PC oblivion was just the next iteration in the elder scroll series that was going to happen in the same way whether you had a next generation console or not. Does a game have to be released on a next gen console in order to say it has next gen graphics?
Doom 3 (on the PC) was released in 2004. It has graphics that can almost rival any game released on the 360 or PS3 currently. Is doom 3 considered to have next gen graphics? If Doom 3 was built from the ground up for the PS3 but still in the exact same form as it was on the PC in 2004, would it then be considered to have next gen graphics?
Don’t get me wrong, I understand what people mean when they say it…I just think its funny

same with me, games become more addict and couldn’t resist, games no longer a kids stuff, it is as hard as work, similarity to hours and effort. so I think we should change our statement in order to describe peoples who played a game, it is not playing anymore, it is more serious and danger.. you know what I mean..

My mind flashed back to the movie “Existenz”. I think, if that’s next-gen graphic, we’re in grave danger really.

The idea of next gen graphics in games is clearly a moving target. However I really don’t think there is a ton more that can be done with graphics, if you look at the games from 2004 and the games form 2008, the differeneces although there are not as extreme as one would expect. Not to meniton many platforms like the Nintendo Wii have made highly successful games with minimal graphics and processing power. At the end of the day gameplay makes the difference. At least that is this gamer’s opinion
