Ways to consume daily news and info has sure changed a lot…Fast
When Anna Nicole Smith died, I was at work. one of my co-workers wife called up and told him that she had heard it on the radio and asked if he heard anything. The first thing we did went to Technorati and right away found a blog post talking about her death…..
A couple of weeks ago, when the Oscars were on, I was trying to find out the winners . Even though I was sitting right in front of my television and could’ve easily turned to the channel and watched it, I went to Technorati every 10 minutes or so getting updates from the different blogs that were making blog post….
Last week, a friend of mine called and asked if I had heard anything about Sinbad dying. at the time I hadn’t, but right after I got off the phone, once again I searched Technorati looking for info (which it ended up being a hoax).
Notice a trend here?
No, its not that in each of these situations I used Technorati…..Its that I went to the web for the answers instead of watching the news or reading a newspaper etc.
I have almost gotten to the point where the internet is my first, and sometimes only choice of finding out info or whats going on.
Yea I do still read the newspaper, magazines (lots of them), and watch TV / "the news", but now I do those things primarily for entertainment and I hate to say it, time wasting. When I want to find out whats going on…or "the news" I usually go to my favorite sources on the web to satisfy those inquiries.
Not only has that been the case with finding out about current or breaking news, it also has been the case with a lot of other things. For example, in my closet, I have a 2005 and 2006 phone book (yellow pages) on the shelf…..still shrink wrapped . I cant remember the last time I used the yellow pages to find a phone number of business. If I were to forget my cell phone, and had to call someone, I would be completely at a lost because I haven’t remembered anyones phone number in years.
The funny thing about all this is how times have made such a huge change in such a short time. When I was in high school (graduated in 1990) you could get in trouble for having a calculator in class, now a lot of school kids are being issued notebook computers every year. I cant imagine how things will be in another 10 years or so.

Very good post and I enjoyed reading it. I am with you 100% about the cell phone, yellow pages and remembering phone numbers. Now that I think about it, the only phone number that I remember my heart is my dad’s home phone… don’t even his cell phone lol.
I too use the internet a good bit to find news, although I still watch television news a lot too. I tend to watch tv news when nothing else is on… its a good source for general news, stuff that I wouldn’t know to look up otherwise (if that makes sense). Also, tv is still my best source for local news, as some of my local news websites are just terrible.
Even with the internet more popular than ever, I still don’t see newspapers or magazines going anywhere for a very long time. Most of the stories in magazines and many in newspapers are in-dept stories, stuff that is too long for tv news and probably would bore you in front of a computer. But with the easy of portability of print media, it makes these stories more practical to read and thus, the market remains

Yea the newspaper and other traditional ways of reading things aren’t going anywhere any time soon and are still very valuable.
One thing I have noticed….while like you said magazines are a lot of times more in depth on whatever topic your reading about….usually most things I have already read about before reading the magazine.
I think its just because on the web, when news hits. its there almost instantly where as in magazines that are usually published on a monthly basis you usually have to wait

Great post and so true. The web has its advantages and disadvantages but it’s the first place to turn to for info. I just try to only rely on credible sites.
