Want a new homepage? Dont forget about iGoogle
With all the talk about Yahoo and Google that I have done lately, I was reminded of a little Google area that has been around for a while but I never think about it. iGoogle, or Google.com/ig seems like it is meant to be Google’s answer to Yahoo’s home page.

Like Yahoo, when you visit iGoogle, you are greeted with different news headlines, your Gmail notifications, Youtube videos and a few more items. Typical information that you would expect from a page to be use as a home page / portal. But still, it is a little bare.
When I first heard about iGoogle, it was when Ajax was starting to take off and this particular page took advantage of a lot of those Ajax features. I have to say, it really doesn’t look any different today as it did back then. But when you look a little deeper, you’d notice that there is a bit of customization you can do that will make iGoogle a sufficient home page.
First, every area on the page, the news headlines, the clock, the gmail area, can all be dragged around the page so that you can set things up to what works for you. You can also dig a little deeper and find more items (which works like widgets) to add to your page. Items such as sports scores, DIGG.com categories and CNN. Plenty of things to completely customize your iGoogle page with all the information you want to keep up with.
There are a lot of things you can do with iGoogle, but it still has the same ole plain Jane design of most of Google products. Would be great for those of you that love Google, but want a little more “home page” on their home page.

I’ve played around with Yahoo - but I’ve never heard of iGoogle. Going to have to go check it out - sounds at least interesting since I prefer Google to Yahoo. Thanks for sharing.

Used it since it came out. The ability to put all the google apps on one page (gmail, google reader, etc) is pretty useful.

Yea just about everything Google does is plain. It would be cool if they opened it up and let other people create those widget-like windows to put on iGoogle….sortof like how Firefox let anyone make extenstions
