Update: My little Alexa.com experiment

I just talked about my little experience with Alexa, trying to get my ranking up. If you read the earlier post, my little test involved installing the Alexa toolbar and the widget on my web pages. I’m still not sure if it makes a difference, but every since I installed the toolbar, I have seen a big difference in my ranking.

The biggest difference Ive seen was at Jonzee.com. like I said my ranking had gone way down in the past few months, where I attributed it to the drop off of blog post I made a month or so ago, and the fact that I made a mistake and deleted the website for a little over a week.

A few things I have to say, in case you all are not familiar with how Alexa works.

  • First the rankings come from people who visit your website that either have the Alexa toolbar installed, or used Alexa.com to browse to your website.
  • Second, the lower the ranking number, the better the ranking is. So if your Alexa rank is 900,000 one week, then 500,000 the next week, that is an improvement. You want your Alexa ranking number to be lower.

Your rank, the one that Alexa shows to all of the 3rd party services is an average of the last 3 months. but when you search for your ranking on Alexa.com, you will see the ranking for the most recent week also. That gives a good idea of improvement, and is what Ive been looking at to see if there is any difference in my rankings once I added the toolbars etc.

Another thing to keep in mind is since Alexa gets the numbers from people that are using Alexa in one form or another, it will not always be completely accurate. Like I said in the last post, I have consistently had a good amount more unique visitors over at Jonzee.com than I have had at Jonespc.com, its always been that way, but my overall Alexa rank at Jonzee.com is a lot worse than my overall Alexa rank at Jonespc.com.

But to update you on my progress so far, I just happen to check Alexa to see how Jonzee.com is doing and my rank for the most recent week has gone way down, (or way up, its actually an improvement).

As you can see by the picture, my overall rank is in the millions, but my rank for the week is 307,348. As I look now, I can see that it has already improved my 3 month ranking. When I first started this test, my 3 month ranking over at Jonzee.com was over 5 million. Now, my 3 month ranking is a little over 1 million. (I think the image above is not completely current, seems like its dropping every day).

One thing I did here (at Jonespc) that I didn’t do at Jonzee.com was that I added the widget to the page. But Im still seeing better results at Jonzee.com than I am here. Also, I visit Jonespc.com a ton of a lot more than I visit Jonzee.com. I may be wrong, but I figured that the improvement that comes with having the toolbar installed, would come from me visiting my own websites and getting counted, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I believe the toolbar does get things started, but it doesn’t really add up as far as how.

But that was just a little update to my little experiment, I have became really curious to see where this is going to level off.

I’m aware of alexa rankings, but am not sure how that is translates to traffic or better yet, $ if the numbers are being inflated by my own trips to my site?
