Tekzilla is cool, but how many more “The Screen Savers” style shows do we need?
Just about anything Revision 3 does, I tend to like and that hasn’t changed with the new Rev 3 show Tekzilla. About a month ago I talked about Patrick Norton leaving DLTV, even speculated that he will probably be heading to Rev 3 in some form or fashion. I sit down to check out Tekzilla last night and who else do I see? Patrick Norton.
Well to be honest, I wasn’t too surprised to see Patrick at Rev 3, even though when he left DLTV he didn’t state his plans. That has been about a month ago and he has since talked about joining Rev 3 on Twit and the guys at Diggnation have confirmed it. Not to mention he has hosted a couple of episodes of Systm, another Revision 3 show.
Tekzilla so far with its opening episode looks to be a pretty good show. Patrick Norton and the lovely Jessica Corbin (another Tech TV personality) host the show. The topics are pretty much gadgets and tips (like many other online video shows). Even though there are tons of shows covering these topics, I think its the personalities that seperate them all from each other, and make it viable to have so many. Patrick and Jessica Corbin seems to make a good fit in the case of Tekzilla. First you have Patrick, who is the straight forward techie geek, then Jessica who in her own right is just as Geeky, but can play the average girl role when needed. It gives a good mix of tech jargon for those that like that, then the layman’s explanation for those of us who aren’t quite up to the complicated jargon.
Like I said, there are a lot of these shows that follow the format of geeks, gadgets, tech and tips, what I would call the Screen Savers format. Watching Tekzilla made me think about how many of these Screen Savers type shows are out there, and if there is a need to have so many. Why not a Sit-com? TikibarTV kind of hits on that type of show, but why aren’t there more. If you look at most of the shows at Rev 3, most of them are basically a Screen Savers style show in one way or another, 1-3 host talking about tech or geeky things in one form or another. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of the shows on Revision 3, I also love all the DLTV, Geek brief, Hak 5 and Cranky Geeks shows also. I’m just waiting for people to start creating the "Revision 3 Movie of the week" or a Totally Rad show version of "The Shield", Id even appreciate a Diggnation based "Everybody Hates Kevin".
Revision 3 is pretty much creating a whole network of web based shows, and I like what they are doing. I just hope they start to mix it up a bit.
