Streaming media to your Xbox 360 just got easier (Fall Update).
Today is the big day for Xbox 360 owners. The coveted Fall update. I got home from work this morning (yea I worked last night) downloaded the update and started playing around with it. One of the new features is the addition of Divx and Xvid video playback. I mentioned a while ago about how I use my old xbox as a media player, streaming files from my PC to the Xbox. Ive been playing around with the new features of the Xbox 360 and it has finally grown to a point where It can replace my old Xbox for that purpose
How do you stream media from your PC to your Xbox 360
For you Windows XP owners it is really simple. All you have to do is have Windows media player 11, the fall update, and your 360 and PC on the same network.
- Start Windows media player.
- Make sure whatever you want to stream is listed in your library.
- Click the little arrow under the library tab and select media share.
- Select your Xbox 360 click ok.
Then go to your 360 and go to videos under media and you should find your PC. From there you will find all of your shared videos and since the 360 now supports Xvid and Divx you will actually be able to watch something you have downloaded, bittorrented or video podcast.
In Windows Vista, you basically follow the same rules, except the Xbox will find your 360 automatically. As far as how it works. the streaming of videos work for me as well as it does with my original Xbox. Thats a good thing. until now I still had both Xbox’s connected to my TV but with this new functionality I might be able to finally put the old Xbox away.
