Search for music by singing instead of typing
The other day, I was trying to remember the name of a song that was stuck in my head. I was thinking "wouldn’t it be great if I could sing the song and a search engine could tell me the name of the song?" I forgot, there is a site that claims to do just that, Midomi.com. I got my USB headset and went to Midomi.com to try it out.
The site kind of remind you of the typical community/myspace/facebook style website. You can search for music by text or you can connect your headset and sing or hum part of the song and it will try to match what you sing with a song. I don’t know if I’m that bad of a singer but I spent about 10 minutes singing songs into the mic, and never got a match. So I decided to just look around the site.
One thing I notice when doing text searches, a lot of music wasn’t listed. I did a lot of searches that didn’t have any results, that probably played a part in my singing searches not getting results. But singing searches aside, I found another form of entertainment in this site and it comes by way of user submitted recordings.
For each song listed at Midomi.com, you can sing a portion of the song and have it listed along with the actual song. Of coarse you have to sign up (its free) and create a profile etc. When you have recordings, other users of the site can become fans. On your profile, it will show how many fans you have. Its pretty cool. I went through and listened to some of the user submitted renditions of the songs and I will tell you, some of the things I heard were HILARIOUS. Especially some of the Rap music. listening and laughing at those songs lasted about a good 20-30 minutes. I was satisfied.
There were some people that did a really good job, so it wasn’t all comedy.
After I was done my quick look around midomi.com, I decided to sing a song that I had already listened to to see if it would show up as a result, and it did. Maybe it does work.

This site sounds pretty amazing. i don’t know how many times i’ve had a song stuck in my head and didn’t know the name or the artist. this may solve my problem.
of course, i am also a terrible singer, so if you need to have the right pitch, etc. I’ll have to resort back to typing.

This site sounds great, only one problem, what if you’re looking for dance music or classical? where theres nothing ’sing-able’? then you’d be stuck? could you whistle the tune instead?

Wow i´m really amazed!:) I didn´t know that something like this existed before, i think it´s a great idea!
I did try it with a song and it did work fine…
My voice isn´t the best but it seems it´s enought to find the right song for me!
