Sci Fi channel name change?

When I first heard this I thought it was a joke. The Sci Fi channel is changing its name to…. SyFy. pronounced the same way but spelled different. There is even going to be a new logo associated with the name change (will happen in July).
According to Cnet, looks like the name change is all about wanting to trademark the sci fi channel property. and since “Sci Fi” cant be trademarked because of how commonly the name is used and has been used in the past, they decided to change it.

Looks like the agency that was credited for creating the new Syfy name is saying they’re not responsible! LOL.

This is one of the most retarded things I’ve ever heard. Call it SciFi2, call it Sci Fi Network, whatever, just don’t change the spelling to something completely weird.

The explanation seems quite rational. It’s very similar situation to the recent transformation of Foxmarks addon into Xmarks. If I’m hones this one hurt a bit more :).

The thing is, people will not know what SyFy is. I think they should have re branded it altogether and updated it inventory.

This is just stupid. SyFy really makes no sense whatsoever in relation to science fiction.

I think the new naming is quite cool. I have been watching a BBC documentary “Space” at the moment which is making me want to revisit all the old star treck films. Seeing this post is reminding me to pull out the old movies (lol)
