Miro-Formerly-known-as-democracy-player

Open source is cool, or at least that’s what they keep telling me. One thing I do know, Open source usually means lots of functionality, and sometimes free. Miro fits the bill nicely. Miro is an open source media playback and managing platform. Miro was at one time the Democracy player as it still works pretty similiar. It is meant to be used as sort of a podcatcher for video files.

As far as functionality, there is a lot there. You can subscribe to video podcast and other internet video related content. Like most applications of this sort, you can schedule how frequent it checks for new episodes of your favorite online show. Miro will also manage your space, deleting older files, to make room for new files. What they call “Tivo” like functionality.

Not only does the Miro player download video content from the web, it is also a full featured media player. You could completely replace Windows Media Player with Miro and start using Miro to view all of your video content. A lot of Microsoft haters would find that really appealing.

There is also a video search feature that lets you search video services such as Youtube, Blip.tv, Daily Motion and Revver right from the Miro player. Where you can then download and view those files.

Like I said open source is cool, and if you’re looking to free yourself from Windows Media Player, or even iTunes, Miro might be worth a look.
