Make legal (as far as I know) Backups or your copy protected DVDs with DVD43
I dont do it much anymore, but way back in the day, I use to like to make backup copies of my DVD movies. I was in love with a little program called DVDShrink. Now DVDShrink has been bought up and the last version made is the only version available online (there are newer versions but it isnt the same program). Every once in a while I get asked about making backup copies of DVD’s and how to do it. As you all know, the copy protection keeps you from just firing up Nero and copying your DVDs.
Seems like these days its a 2 software job. One software to strip the copy protection and another to do tha actual copying. AnyDVD works great but if you want that same functionality without the cost, you should direct your google search to DVD43.
How does DVD43 work?

Once you install DVD43, you’ll see a little icon in your taskbar. It runs in the backround and when you insert a DVD movie or a protected audio CD, DVD43 attaches itself to that media and removes any region code or copy protection that is on that media. After DVD43 does it job (which takes a few seconds) you can then open up your favorite DVD copying program and make that backup. For this, I would still use DVDShrink, but there are others out there that are popular, such as cloneDVD.

As long as you keep the copies you make for yourself , I don’t see any legal problem with this, but we all know the media industry, chances are that they will be suing anyone over this.

Thanks - useful info.
I purchased a product recently called “PC Secret Formula” for speeding up your pc. With it came a video where the seller shows just how to make great copies using only free copy software.
Although it did seem to do the job, it seemed to involve a bit of time and know-how. Obviously, the more you use his method, the easier and quicker it would become.
Funny enough, I’d just purchased a newer version of my old dvd copier, which is total simplicity - literally a couple of clicks and all-in-one software, which makes perfect 1:1 copies.
I recently read an interesting article which stated that it is not illegal in certain states/countries to make a backup copy of your dvd movies but it is however, illegal to remove or tamper with the css script. A bit of a catch 22 situation if you asked me, as you cannot copy a movie dvd without first removing the css script.
It is generally accepted though, that it’s ok to copy dvd movies if you actually own the copy and only use it for personal use - which makes sense.

Thanks for that useful information. I have many DVD movies and it’s time for some backup I think. It’s good to be able to access the movies in your hard drive directly and watching on pc fast.
