Is it Cool to be Cuil?
If you remember, I have tried using just Ask.com, and Live.com as my main search engine for a time. Just to see what it would be like if Google went away. It wasn’t that bad, I could actually do that if needed. I know this is a little premature, but I figured Id try the same thing with the new Search engine Cuil.com.
I say its premature because even though it looks nice, and claim to have the most websites indexed. Its new, and I know that there is work that still needs to be done. So, just for the heck of it. I decided that I was going to do the same thing I did with Live.com. I was going to only use Cuil.com as my main search engine for as long as I could stand.
Cuil as my only search engine? How did that work out?
Well, it didn’t really last long at all. Before this, I have been to Cuil a few times. Checking it out, trying to figure out what it is all about but I never actually used it for anything too serious. I like the look of Cuil, I even like the columns.
I started going to Cuil for my searches and after about 3 searches, I realized that this just wouldn’t work. Id say less than an hour and I decided that this idea was a little premature and I will try again after some more time has passed.
I do hope things get better, as I think one of the larger search engines is going to go away in a year or so (Yahoo, MSN, or AOL).

Sorry to hear that Cuil couldn’t cut it in your anti-Google experiment!
I work for Me.dium, a crowd-powered search engine. We have a full web index, but we change the results based on the surfing activity of our user base (now over 2,000,000). It’s in alpha, but I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. http://me.dium.com/search
Have a good weekend!

Cuil seems to be a huge waste of money. Their results are uber worthless and you are also able to find queries Cuil won’t be able to give you results for. And those queries are perfectly regular words, from dictionary.
I wonder where those $30 million of investments went.

I’ve seen cuil before. I don’t really like the layout of the results. I think it makes it harder to really see the results or scan the results quickly. I just think that it goes against the natural way us westerners are tuned into scanning for what we are looking for. It just has an unnatural feel to me.
Nice that you’re on the look out to try new search engines though.

Cuil results is really off. Random photos tagged against urls? I think it still has a long way to go

We would embrace competition no matter how small or insignificant it is :>

kudos to you for actually giving this experiment a try.
don’t think i could stand to use a search engine other than google for too long. i just like that it works. sometimes it surprises me by how well it works (such as when i’m looking for an exchange rate or word definition).
still, i’m also a big fan of competition. i do wonder though how many large search engines will continue to remain viable.

It appears to be human tweaked like Mahalo, but the results are not as good. It says it has indexed the most sites, but I can’t imagine, considering the search results it gives.
