I dont want to Waggle!!!
As you know, the new “old” e3 is going on this week and as I watch the press conferences and read through all of the information and announcements made by the 3 console makers, I see something that I just don’t like.
WAGGLE!
What is waggle you say? well its the term many use for the Nintendo Wii’s method of control. The motion controller, where you hold something in your hand and wave it around to interact with your video game. Many of these games require you to look and feel silly while you are playing. A lot of times you actually have to stand up in your living room or bedroom in front of your TV to get the most out of the motion controller. swinging or waving your arms.
Nintendo.
As you know, the motion (waggle) controller has been around for a few years and is probably the biggest draw and selling point of the Wii console. I bought my stepdaughter a Wii a few years ago and she loves it, but I have absolutely no interest in the console. At first, I thought “well Nintendo usually doesn’t release games that I’m interested in, but I’ll probably find some fun here and there with that motion controller”
I tried, but I just don’t like that method of controlling.
Microsoft.
At Microsoft’s E3 press conference, they announced and showed off what they are calling project Natal for the Xbox 360. Don’t get me wrong, Project Natal looks amazing. Their method of control consist of a special camera that acts as your very own motion capture unit. You stand, kick, jump, swing your arms, run…anything you do in front of the camera can be translated to some type of control or interaction with the game you are playing. Little things such as pretending to put on glasses, and even voice and face recognition can be detected and incorporated into gameplay. It really looks amazing.
Sony.
Sony also unveiled its motion option for the PS3, which looked to be a mixture of what Microsoft showed and what Nintendo has had all along. You use a camera and hold a “remote like” in each hand. The combination of those items give you a very accurate, 1:1 motion control experience. similar to the Nintendo Wii with the motion plus addon you can swing swords or golf clubs with great accuracy.
The problem?
Like the title of this blog post suggest, I just dont want to waggle. the way things look, video gaming looks like it want to head in a direction where you stand and jump around in front of your TV. I just dont want to do that. I want to sit in my comfortable recliener and relax while playing games. I want to press A to throw a pass, I want to steer a Ferrari with a analog stick and shoot baddies with my trigger finger….Not jump, point, wave and lean.

I guess its something for everyone being a big Star Wars fan I would love to have a realistic lightsaber game, this technology looks like its heading in the right direction which is fine by me. Even for those who want to sit in the comfort of their chair and play the advancement in this kind of technology should also have a positive impact on the quality and advancement of conventional console games.

These are pretty amazing videos as I was planning to purchase XBOX 360 for my son. I a quite unfamiliar with all this technology because I only like PS games. I am wondered that how these consoles are evolved from Atari. Thanks for videos and I’ll like to Waggle at the moment.

I don’t think the old style of playing games will ever run out of fashion. I’m still sentimental about the MSX games I used to play with 64 bit RAM and cartridges! We play it at home once in a while for fun so I think waggling and jumping around in the front of the TV can both be fun at different times!
June 6th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
@Motion Plus wii, you are very right because I still like to play PC games but I think this new way of gaming is pretty impressive.
June 6th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I think this kind of gaming is popular for anyone who was a kid in the 80s. The joysticks were meant to be played whilst leaping up in your seat! Is no surprise they evolved from Ataris!
June 8th, 2009 at 5:39 am
I guess your just lazy, and to be honest - I’m not the type of jumping and pointing in front of the tv either.
June 8th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Yeah sometimes you don’t have the energy to jump around, but project Natal really looks interesting enough to give it a chance. It might develop into something interesting for older players, who feel the need to exercise more, while the young can still sit and play :).
June 9th, 2009 at 2:16 am
thank you very much for the beneficial information, you are very right because I still like to play PC games but I think this new way of gaming is pretty impressive.

These are something which kids enjoy. I saw my daughter vigorously moving around the hall with her games. I am sure most the kids love playing with PC games.
June 11th, 2009 at 6:01 am
Hi, I like this video most. Its a realistic type video, We often think that the game which we are playing for is going to be happen. Great video it is.

To ignore the importance of waggle would be to forget what makes the Wii so awesome.
June 14th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Looking on the bright side, standing, kicking, jumping, swinging your arms and running in order to control the game is exercising and playing at the same time. You are having fun while moving your body.
June 15th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Looks cool, good for kids, adults may feel silly though swinging around like that
June 16th, 2009 at 2:24 am
hey he seems to be a rockstar
June 16th, 2009 at 8:59 am
i think waggle is so interesting because we can interact like in real life
June 16th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Wii or Xbox 360?
This is the question which cross my mind for buying for may son
June 16th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Yes I heard so much about this, I dont think that MS can take on the Wii, They cant win that war now. Too late
June 17th, 2009 at 4:45 am
I think that motion control is the future of gaming but it needs to be improved before it can overtake the more traditional methods of control
June 17th, 2009 at 6:11 am
good
June 17th, 2009 at 8:04 am
I really love the motion controls which have come in in recent years. The wii has done a lot to make the competition step it up

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:50 am
Project Natal looks very cool.. but just seems a bit over the top for a serious gamer.
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:57 am
hey motion moving is just an awesome thing.
thank you so much for showing……..
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:40 pm

June 24th, 2009 at 3:24 am
motion control and 3d tv’s are the future of gaming!
June 24th, 2009 at 4:16 am
This system will fail , its too expensive which will make it hard to compete in the gaming industry. its just like when NEGEO brought out there system. plz try to understand y they failed and? nintendo didnt the only good thing about the natal is the interface and milo althought he’s kinda greepy . FAILURE alert they never showed fps games , imagine playing an fps and applying tactics and the fighting game it was strange y didnt the guy low kicked instead of dogging plz think into that
June 24th, 2009 at 10:25 am
I love my Wii but what Sony are doing is amazing. I really want to see this in real life
June 24th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Project Natal looks sick.. I wonder what the going price is going to be for these systems?
June 25th, 2009 at 2:30 am
Hey it was a wonderful video
June 25th, 2009 at 8:16 am
I’ll follow u.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
meh, just Sony trying to catch up with Nintendo in the motion activated stuff. Was is Sony or Xbox that scoffed at the Wii when it first cam out saying they were going in a “different” direction.
June 26th, 2009 at 5:30 am
I’m torn here. Waggling has it’s time and place, and it’s fun to do it .. but if they think they will eventually replace the old school console gaming style, they’re wrong. Too many reasons to list them all here.
Still, as an addition to the regular gamepad - why not.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:29 am
These are pretty amazing videos as I was planning to purchase XBOX 360 for my son. I a quite unfamiliar with all this technology because I only like PS games. I am wondered that how these consoles are evolved from Atari. Thanks for videos and I’ll like to Waggle at the moment.

The Project Natal demo trailer looked incredibly staged and pre-planned. I don’t believe it will actually be that responsive. It’s still very interesting though, looking forward to seeing more on it.
June 28th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
i think waggle is so interesting. we can play feel alive. so awesome.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:06 am
hmm, but is this really better than Wii…? I don’t think so…
June 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
cool trailer
June 30th, 2009 at 3:11 am
In my opinion Wii i better
June 30th, 2009 at 7:48 am
I totally agree with you. Wii type of waggle is just not my cup of tea. If I want play “real” football, I go and play football.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:40 am
Right, I think the xbox might do better thank its competitors.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:00 am
Waggle looks totally awseme dude, I love they way gaming is changing
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 am
I agree, they PS3 should keep its controls the way they are.
July 6th, 2009 at 2:05 am
great trailer!.. the future of all gaming is waggle controls and 3D tv’s!
July 7th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
The thing i don’t like in waggle that you have to keep your arms moving and you as well at the front of TV system where as in wire Connectivity we need not to be move in such silly way..

July 8th, 2009 at 3:09 am
I agree with the author. Jumping up and down, performing whacky moves and sweating etc is not exactly what I understand and relaxation
July 8th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Really {great|fantastic|brilliant|informative} post, well written, concise and comprehensive. {thanks|thank you|many thanks}.
July 8th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Project Natal sounds so cool. Its amazing how far the home gaming industry has come since the old days of Atari.
July 8th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Project Natal and The Wand are cheap copy of the nintendo wii controller
nice read anyway

I totally agree with you, “waggleing” around is not my idea of a relaxing gaming session. I don’t think I will ever get into the Wii. I think that many of us who grew up in a world where video games and physical activity were so totally separate will never have the desire to use anything other then the elbow-down portion of our body to play video games.
It’s good for little kids, but if I want to look like an idiot, I will go to a club and dance.
July 10th, 2009 at 5:13 am
I agree with you too
July 10th, 2009 at 7:19 am
Waggle is a catchy name and a great move from MS, I look forward to it

If something works, everyone else will copy it at some point. Could spell big problems for Nintendo if these other systems are any good.

Wow, this is amazing! The features are so cool. Microsoft really has a great way to letting people have a unique gaming experience. Computer and online gaming has really changed a great deal from what they were just few years ago.

I can’t wait for this to come out. I just wonder if enough sales will be generated by the time it comes out, considering people are more practical in buying nowadays.

July 23rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Hi, Great video. It’s a realistic type video, We often think that the game which we are playing for is going to be happen. I liked it.
July 24th, 2009 at 12:34 am
jumping, pointing, waving is a physical activity and it is good for our health to move a little. Like an exercise, right?
July 24th, 2009 at 8:06 am
Jumping in front of a tv is no substitute for real exercise yet so many fatties seem to think that an hour on wii fit is equal to an hour at the gym. What the hell is wrong with people?!
July 24th, 2009 at 8:15 am
I dont think that MS can take on the Wii, They cant win that war now. Too late
July 25th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Nice vid’s man. The Wii on sale now in Holland. Think maybe now is the time
July 28th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Wii’s make me feel silly
July 29th, 2009 at 1:48 am
The good thing about the motion controller is that it gets the young kids up off the couch. You may not have to worry about it, but many kids are sitting in their homes in San Diego and getting chubby, while the great weather and surfing are low on the priority list. I like getting comfortable when gaming too, but only after a stressful day of work. If it was a 12+ hours a day then I’d need a little waggle too.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:08 am
I dunno… I somehow love the Wii. The best part is my kids wont be sitting on the couch while playing. They will actually have to get up and move around. No more couch potatoes.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:10 am
The only thing i don’t like about wii is that the games available for it are very limited. Also each type of game requires a different type of controller. Which, if you ask me is quite irritating in the long run.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:19 am
yes limited games is not good!.. not to boot the different controllers. wait for the xbox 360 natal
July 30th, 2009 at 3:56 am
yes Natal all the way!.. although the PS3 new device coming soon looks cool too
July 31st, 2009 at 4:59 am
I like the sound of this!.. although I am waiting for the Natal.

Waggle?
Is it different to diggle?
August 1st, 2009 at 5:45 am
I hate to waggle but my kids can not seem to get enough of it so if it makes them happy and tired afterwards I am a happy Papa.

I have seen this video already on Youtube and it really amazes me because its too hi-tech!! I’m pretty sure that once its released it cost alotttt !
August 4th, 2009 at 1:03 am
This is too much fun! It will surely expensive once its out on the market.
August 4th, 2009 at 1:08 am
“What is waggle you say? well its the term many use for the Nintendo Wii’s method of control. The motion controller, where you hold something in your hand and wave it around to interact with your video game. Many of these games require you to look and feel silly while you are playing.”
But waggling is really fun. It’s okay if you look ridiculous while you waggle. Just make sure you’re in the privacy of your home.

I can’t wait to get the new Xbox. It seems like MS has been taking quite a long time with the r & d for this one. I wish they could divert a few million from their bing advertising to speed up the release of the new platform.

Hi…
I will also said after read this that… thank you very much for the beneficial information, you are very right because I still like to play PC games but I think this new way of gaming is pretty impressive.
August 13th, 2009 at 11:27 am
While I think the technology behind all of the motion-control systems is pretty impressive, I really don’t want to be jumping up and down in front of my television either. The Wii motion has made millions upon millions for Nintendo, but in all honesty, after you’ve waggled through a few games you’ve already gotten the gist of most of the gaming catalog. It is a neat system, but I can’t imagine not having a PS3 or 360 for playing quote/unquote real games.
August 13th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
H?mm.. It will surely expensive once its out on the market.
August 13th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
welcome to the new era guys….just like a sci-fi movies
everything controlled by computer
August 17th, 2009 at 2:48 am
I cannot wait for the day when video games get advanced enough to read your general body movements and put them into interaction in a game. Its not that far away!

Better than it used to be. I remember the days when you literally had to waggle your joystick until it broke in games like Decathlon. What a killer.

Will be interesting to see if project natal can take over the wii’s lead
September 12th, 2009 at 9:14 am
This is for sure much better than wii if they can get it to work as well as the video shows
September 13th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I agree. Works with the Wii as that’s the whole idea, but there’s no need in other consoles.
September 14th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I totally understand that you don’t want to waggle. but it seems most of the Game Console today were actually getting really better and better and forgetting the old school game style that we always wanted. On a positive way, This waggle console games really make us active and lively while we are playing it. It does really good at our health because it can be also an exercise which we don’t get in using the game controller joy sticks with shocks. All I wish is make their Game console very interactive like it offers a free motion control and game control pad option. In that way we can play and enjoy it much better isn’t it?
September 14th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Wow, Microsoft’s Project Natal is truly amazing. It seems too good to be true that your already inside the virtual world and your controlling everything there.

I have always loved the old way to play games and really was opposed for awhile to the Wii. But after my mother-in-law got one for us, I just love it now. As long as I have the my PS3 and Wii, I am good to go.

I’m with you man. I want to be a lazy gamer, with my fingers on w,a,s,d and my finger on the mouse button. When I want to run around and sweat my ass off, I play soccer.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:56 am
As long as they keep the basic gamepad design I’m happy.

thank you good article
October 27th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
I visit gaming message boards and I’ve never heard anyone say “waggle.” I like it though, so I’ll start using it.
Also, I really hope Natal develops a fighting game of some sort. Although I know it will be hard since the animations for getting hit will throw off the synchronization between the model and the person.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Wow, did you say waggle?! haha, that’s charming.
Thanks for the interesting readings.
October 29th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
I was at E3 this year too, it was awesome…
Personally, I link the “waggle” controls - I think there’s a lot of potential there just waiting to be realized.
Random fact: Did you know that the Sega Dreamcast had motion controls years before the Wii? Apparently a lot of games like Soul Calibur and Virtua Tennis could be played with the fishing controller in the same way that you play games with the Wii-mote.
October 30th, 2009 at 5:22 am
Thakns for the information, I was at E3 five years ago, and i saw a lot of games and new consoles, you know what console i mean…

Nice post , Your Ideas and opinions are all very good.
Thanks.
November 6th, 2009 at 11:42 am
The problem is that most people are seizing on it as a way of demonstrating that consoles aren’t the demon device responsible for an obese generation, and are all pointing and saying “Look, this can be a really positive thing for the kids”. At least, that’s the way it’s going here in the UK.
People seem to be completely unable to fathom the idea that they’re responsible for their own state of fitness and that of their kids.
November 15th, 2009 at 12:33 am

I can understand the apprehension but I think this will be the future of gaming
December 25th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I never liked any controller that requires me to move my arms up and down like a idiot to play a video game. When i play a video game, its for me to relax. Just like you said, sit back in your favorite chair, use the old school controller. Not to “waggle” around the room after a long day of work. Microsoft is just in competition with nintendo wii with a bad feature. In turn, it just makes more games and consoles the real old school gamers will have no interest in.
December 31st, 2009 at 10:44 am
Whoaaa. This is amazing! Imagine how much use can it get in the industry world. In manufacturing or so.
