When I first started blogging a little over a year ago, social websites were one of those reccomended ways to get traffic.

  • You ping Technorati
  • You create a sitemap and practice good keyword use (for Google)
  • You join social websites and list your blog
  • And you comment on other blogs.

You do those four things and you will get traffic, or so they say. Technorati hasn’t really brought me much traffic at all. Google (and other search engines) brings a large portion of my traffic. Ive got some traffic that I felt were from commenting on other blogs, but I haven’t made a habit of doing so on a consistent basis. Social websites, like Mybloglog.com, and blogcatalog.com at one time was a real traffic "bringer". Ive seen more traffic from Mybloglog.com over the year than I have Technorati. I have noticed lately that traffic from the social websites I am signed up with has dropped off to almost nothing.

Mybloglog.comFrom the time I first created my account on Mybloglogs.com till today, I have probably checked the site every day, sometimes several times a day. As a matter of fact, in IE7 I have 3 websites set as homepages, Mybloglog.com is one of them. I do this even though the traffic I receive from Mybloglog has all but disappeared. I do this even though I haven’t added anyone as a friend, nor has anyone added me in months. Absolutely nothing is going on as far as my virtual space on Mybloglogs.com but I still check it every day.

Maybe that is my problem…

When I did get traffic from mybloglogs.com, and when I did notice new faces visiting my profile on a daily basis, I was adding friends and visiting people’s blogs as they visited my profile. A lot of times commenting and making it known that I have visited. I dont do any of that anymore. Yea I still read a lot of blogs, I subscribe to them. I’m just not as active as I use to be when it comes to the "social website" side of things. From my point of view, it seems like that part of using those social websites have stopped for everyone. Maybe not. It just seem like one day using social websites to get traffic was "in" then it became a hassle dealing with the spam. Thats about when I stopped being active and I noticed people that Ive ran across that were also active had stopped too.
