Gonna be laid off…but I still need my Broadband service!
I recently got the dreaded announcement that my place of employment is planning to shut down early 2010. After about a week of shock and disappointment, I started looking at the things I need to do to prepare. Of coarse that includes getting rid of bills that I don’t necessarily need to have, or could do without. As I go down the list, I come to my internet service. Right now I pay $60 a month for a 20down/5 up connection.
Now lets not be silly, I’m not gonna get rid of my internet service…I’m not even considering getting rid of broadband or going to the lowest tier. That doesn’t mean that I cant look into other options.
The problem with the “Other options” option is that basically, there is really no other options. Well there are, but they are basically the same. In my area, you have Cox cable internet, Verizon DSL or Verizon fios. When it comes to price, they are all basically the same. Yea you can get lower speeds for cheaper prices but you cant get a “cheaper” service. If you want a certain speed, it will cost the same regardless of the company you choose to get it from. There are no bargains.
There is an option that I looked into briefly, wireless broadband plans. You have sprint, AT&T and Verizon but if you have ever looked into those offerings, you’d know that your gonna pay about $60 bucks a month for an “unlimited” data plan. A plan that will put you at a lower speed than the lowest tier that is offered by most wired broadband services and isnt really unlimited because they all have 5gb a month limits.
If you do want to get a look at your options without having to go from website to website, where do you go? Well there are a few websites out there that compile prices or just give you an idea of prices so that you will know what you are looking at if you arent already familiar. Websites like http://www.broadbandexpert.com.au, http://www.broadbandreports.com/, or http://www.thebroadbandguide.com.
Truth be told, with as much as I do on the internet, and now that I will be in the job market and will be using the internet to look for a job and some training, I wont be getting rid of my broadband service anytime soon. Cox will have me for a costumer till I run out of money…or until I find something equivalent but cheaper

I wish I had unemployment right now. 5GB plans are dangerous. It is really easy to go over and get charged UHNDREDS of dollars in penalties. AT & T will not give you any warning you went over… just a bill that can bankrupt you.

Reliable internet connnectivity should likely be high on your list of important things… it will help you find a new job. I would use coupons for food etc… and use the savings to pay your Internet.

Hi,
I also have many expenses to my blog and sites. By the time you pay for your internet service, your hosting service, your autoresponder, etc. It adds to a big expense.
Yet most Internet marketers make almost nothing in their first two years. Sometimes it’s hard to justify the expenses when they’re returning no return.

Hm sad to here that but you seem in control of the whole situation..

I would give up on food and water before I would give up on internet. Not joking either!
November 20th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Are you sure you can’t look at downgrading? Most people aren’t getting the full 20 mbits any way. I did change my broadband account a while ago and the speed difference was not noticable in 9 out of 10 cases.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
I live in MI and it is sad to experience the worst rate of unemployment in the nation

Yeah, giving up decent internet is really hard. Nothing is more frustrating than dropped connection or connections that are slow as hell.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:37 am
Sorry to hear that you lost your job, i don’t have a job and i know what you feel. It sucks!
So, if my parents wouldn’t be paying for our internet, i would probably ‘borrow’ from my neighbors
As to internet, here is chicago, i have about 10 free wifis from my neighbors!
November 30th, 2009 at 4:22 am
Sorry about the Job. Things stink over here in the UK too. Unemployment is shooting up, and our PM doesn’t seem to have a clue what he’s doing.
Thankfully, we have a really competitive broadband service over here. You rent your line from BT $12PCM, and then you can subscribe to anyone’s broadband service. You can even get it for free (if you can live with a slightly lower speed). Sounds like you have a price fixing problem over there. Can’t you complain to your “competition” regulator?

Uh-oh..too bad to hear that buddy!..Better go recycling your ink cartridges. The best way to do this is to bring your empty ink cartridges and have it refilled. Not only you are saving money, you’re saving mother earth as well.

Really really sorry to hear about yoru impending redundment. What a shame. Hope you can find an alternative role. I agree with you that getting rid of the broad band is not a good idea as the internet will almost certainly be a good way to seek alternative employement or even make money. Good luck.

My roommate and I had to recently do the same thing, and we THOUGHT it’d be a good idea to cut off the internet. Currently we’re stealing wi-fi from our neighbors, but it ALWAYS goes out and it’s so slow. Good thinking on keeping the internet.
January 18th, 2010 at 8:05 am
great project
thx for sharing
January 20th, 2010 at 8:45 am
In the year 2010 you cannot live without internet, so i can see how big a problem that can be.
i would also be very frustrated if it was me.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
Thanks Perfect (:
January 20th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
Personally I wouldn’t go for wireless internet, I think it’s still an immature technology, good for chatting and the like but useless for work. Also, it’s not unlimited, and the speed is slow or inconstant. You can’t rely on it. If I were you I’ll try to stick to DSL, and cut the spendings in other aspects of my life. Just my point of view.
January 24th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
I am the same way, need to make cuts, but can’t be the internet. It has become a necessity in our households and many others. The phone and tv would be first!
January 25th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
I’m going thru similiar budget decisions at home. This economy sucks! Anyhow, I hope that you haven’t given up blogging…

Regarding 3G internet connections, I guess they’re not a reliable option for work, unless you’re not doing much mobility and are located in a place with many signal bars, which for most of us is not the case.
