When I browse the web, I use the middle mouse button a lot. I do a search, get the list of results then I scan the list. Anything that seems interesting, I middle click the link to open in a new tab / window. That way I have all of the items I want to check out there waiting for me, and I have the original search results page still there to go back to.

I find that method pretty easy for managing deep searching on the web. Ive tried to tell others about that way of managing search results but I find that it is hard to explain it to people that aren’t already familiar with different ways to open links. Ive watched people looking for things get so turned around they have to close the browser out completely to start over. Thats their way of doing things.

Opening up links in a new window is my way of doing things.

Open-Link-in-New WindowIf you noticed, most of the links on my blog will open in a new window or tab. Mainly because thats how I like to surf…Well thats not the main reason. The main reason is that I don’t want anyone to completely loose my page if they click on a link in a blog post. I want my page to still be sittin there…Chillin…Waiting for you to come back and finish reading the post, or browsing some of the other post on the site.

If your not familiar with HTML (don’t worry, I’m a newbie myself) You can set a destination of a link by adding these little words to the link "target = " _blank"". Or if your inside Wordpress or using any blogging platform that uses a WYSIWYG editor, you’d click the hyperlink icon and select "New Window (_blank)" for the target. its easy enough and then you have your links opening in another window.

That satisfies me, but Ive watched people click on links that open in new windows, and that completely throws them off. They then think they’ve lost the original page.

So it seems like a no win situation, so what do I do? Well for now, I’m going to keep linking in new windows. But I am curious about other people, what do they prefer.
