A while ago I created a list of my favorite Podcast and recently I got a little surprise, sortof a combination of the 2 in one podcast. The 1up yours show was my number 2 and is a gaming podcast that deals almost exclusively with console gaming. These guys usually have some interesting and entertaining conversation. First you have Shane Bettenhasen, who use to really annoy me with his "almost embarrassing" fanboyism. Now I find Shane a highlight of the show. Yea he is still the "almost embarrassing" fanboy, but at the same time he is on top of things and brings great conversation and info. Then you have Garnett Lee, whom I think my gaming taste most resemble. I mention those 2 because they are probably the most flashy of the group of 4 or 5 but all of them are really good to listen to and I think they always seem to have the right person for the topic(s) they are discussing.
On the other hand, I have my number 1 podcast from that list, the Totally Rad Show. This show is a multi-topic show: Movies, Video games, Comics, TV. The Movie portion of the show seems to be the primary topic of the 3 or 4. in this show. We have Alex Albrecht, whom we all know from Diggnation. I like to think of him as the all around guy of the show. Then theres Dan Trachtenburge, the aspiring director and the "Movie Man" of the show. last but not least you have Jeff Cannata, whom I also thought of as a all around guy.
This past episode of the 1up show had Jeff Cannata as a special guest, and I have to say it was a real treat. Jeff really surprised me as he held his own amongst the likes of Shane and Garnett. He pretty much fit right in with the crew while also bring a little of his own personality to the show that was new and different than the others. One thing I like about the 1up show is the different personalities. Every cast member seem to be their own person and they all compliment each other. Jeff was no different. The show was about 2 hours long but it was a very interesting 2 hours. I hope to see that combination again, or better yet having one of the 1up guys on the Totally Rad Show.
I have about an hour drive to work. Most days, I listen to podcast the way there and the way home, sometimes I listen to them while I’m at work. The other day I had somewhat of a marathon podcast listening day. I listened to them on my way to work, and several during the day and started listening to them on my way home. There was one small problem, I didn’t charge my MP3 player the night before so on my way home the battery died. Once that happened, I then turned on the radio and started listening to music. As I was listening to the radio, I realized that I listen to more podcast than I do the radio. Then I started thinking about the podcast that I do listen to, and why I like listening to them.
Many of them I listen to because I’m just interested in the topic, and my interest in that topic makes that podcast interesting to me. But there are some podcast that are just generally entertaining, so entertaining that I think I would listen even if it was a topic that I didn’t really care for. My thoughts wandered then I ended up thinking about which podcast do I like the most. I asked myself this question…
If I can only subscribe to 5 podcast’s which 5 would I choose?
That is a pretty tough question. I thought about all of the podcast that I have on my list, and started thinking about which ones I can do without if I had too, which ones are the most satisfying to listen to if I was limited to just 5. It was a hard choice but I did finally narrowed it down to 5. Of coarse they are all taken from my current listening list, and if you are curious to what they are, here is my OPML file with my list.
5. TWIT (This Week In Tech)
The very first Podcast I have ever tried out was "The return of the ScreenSavers", which is now TWIT. I was a big fan of "The Screensavers" when it was on the now defunct TechTV cable station. When the television show disappeared, I was really missing that dose of tech goodness. I really like the show because it covers a wide range of topics in the tech world, and ussually there are a lot of varied and interesting personalities on the show. Sometimes Leo Laport can get annoying with the Windows bashing but I think he has a good mix of "Techie-ness" and ‘Regular guy" that makes him well worth the listen. He is also really good at lining up some very interesting cast members when some of the regulars are missing. John C Dvorak was one of those guys that I didn’t like much back in the TechTv days, but he has become one of my favorite cast members on the show.
4. The Movie Blog Uncut
This is a somewhat new edition to my list of Podcast that I picked up from the Podcast Awards a few months ago. It quickly became one he podcast I look forward to more than others every week. If the title doesn’t give it away, it is a podcast based on Movie reviews and news items. The cast is very funny and the overall show is just a fun and informative show. Sometimes you run across Podcast that you can see being a mainstream media production and I can see the Movie blog being a show that you would find on the radio or XM/Sirus. The bad thing about this show is the last episode of the podcast was just released due to the head guy taking on another blogging gig. It will be missed, but hopefully the guys over at the Movie Blog Uncut will do something similar in their new publication.
3. Smodcast
This Podcast is the random topic podcast from the director Kevinsmith and producer Scott Mosier of Clerks fame. If you’ve ever seen Kevin Smith talk, outside of directing, you’d know that he love to talk and is a somewhat humorous person. Smodcast is a very funny and interesting Podcast giving you the best of that Kevin Smith banter. From what Ive seen Scott Mosier has been pretty quiet, but he lets loose on the podcast showing you a side of him that is seldom seen in the movies he produce. The thing about Kevin smith that I like is how he seems like someone you could actually know, not "mr Hollywood" or anything like that. If you decide to check out Smodcast, be warned, the language and topics can be very R rated. This one isn’t for the kiddies.
2. The 1up Yours Podcast
For those that never heard of the 1up show, this is a console gaming podcast from the guys over at 1up.com. I like gaming so that alone makes this podcast interesting to me. The reason its number 2 isn’t just because of the topic of the show, The show is just generally entertaining. Just about every cast member of the show has the humor and personality that keeps me looking forward to the show every week. I really think these guys could take any topic and make it fun to listen too. Other than the pure humor and fun, they manage to squeeze in a good amount of information and perspective on console gaming. the show sometimes run at over an hour, sometimes 2 but it is always fun and entertaining regardless how long it is. There is some adult conversation as far as profanity, I would give it a light R rating. But if you like to be entertained and want to hear about the latest console news, the 1up show is something worth checking out.
1. The Totally Rad Show
I talked about this show a while ago when it first debut and I have been listening/watching the show every since. The Totally Rad Show is basically a 3 topic show, Movies, Video games, and Comics. And as I hinted, it is released in video and Audio formats. The production of this show is top notch, with funny skits and all. I think this could easily be a show on television, as it has a Tv-like feel. I’m not sure how well the show is doing as far as veiwership but if you are into podcast and haven’t checked this one out yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.
I know what you’re thinking…Wheres Diggnation? Wheres DLTV? Wheres Buzz Out Loud? Well even though I really like those shows, They didn’t make it to my top 5.
Just about anything Revision 3 does, I tend to like and that hasn’t changed with the new Rev 3 show Tekzilla. About a month ago I talked about Patrick Norton leaving DLTV, even speculated that he will probably be heading to Rev 3 in some form or fashion. I sit down to check out Tekzilla last night and who else do I see? Patrick Norton.
Well to be honest, I wasn’t too surprised to see Patrick at Rev 3, even though when he left DLTV he didn’t state his plans. That has been about a month ago and he has since talked about joining Rev 3 on Twit and the guys at Diggnation have confirmed it. Not to mention he has hosted a couple of episodes of Systm, another Revision 3 show.
Tekzilla so far with its opening episode looks to be a pretty good show. Patrick Norton and the lovely Jessica Corbin (another Tech TV personality) host the show. The topics are pretty much gadgets and tips (like many other online video shows). Even though there are tons of shows covering these topics, I think its the personalities that seperate them all from each other, and make it viable to have so many. Patrick and Jessica Corbin seems to make a good fit in the case of Tekzilla. First you have Patrick, who is the straight forward techie geek, then Jessica who in her own right is just as Geeky, but can play the average girl role when needed. It gives a good mix of tech jargon for those that like that, then the layman’s explanation for those of us who aren’t quite up to the complicated jargon.
Like I said, there are a lot of these shows that follow the format of geeks, gadgets, tech and tips, what I would call the Screen Savers format. Watching Tekzilla made me think about how many of these Screen Savers type shows are out there, and if there is a need to have so many. Why not a Sit-com? TikibarTV kind of hits on that type of show, but why aren’t there more. If you look at most of the shows at Rev 3, most of them are basically a Screen Savers style show in one way or another, 1-3 host talking about tech or geeky things in one form or another. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of the shows on Revision 3, I also love all the DLTV, Geek brief,Hak 5 and Cranky Geeks shows also. I’m just waiting for people to start creating the "Revision 3 Movie of the week" or a Totally Rad show version of "The Shield", Id even appreciate a Diggnation based "Everybody Hates Kevin".
Revision 3 is pretty much creating a whole network of web based shows, and I like what they are doing. I just hope they start to mix it up a bit.
With the growing popularity of internet video on the web, people will start to want to do more than being "talking heads". With the interest in doing more with internet video, comes the need to learn how to do things that will make your video content more appealing to the viewers eye.
How do you make your internet video stand out?
You can go to film school, but who has time (or money) to do that? Im pretty sure there are plenty of books that can teach you the basics about amature filmmaking, right on up to the very complex professional way to make your "I got kicked in the nuts!!!" Youtube video a masterpiece.
In all reality, Indy Mogul would probably be a good start. The Backyard FX video podcast is something that I thought was pretty interesting. each episode focus on some specific feature or effect that a amature film maker would find useful. A lot of the tutorials also focus on what many of us are looking for, low cost ways to do certain things on video. Below i a video that discusses how to do a fight scene. After watching that video about a week ago, I wanted to try some of the things that were talked about.
Check out the video and if you learn some things that you actually try out yourself, I would be very interesting in seeing the results.
There has been a lot of movement as of late on the online Video/ Web site front. you have Jim louderback going to Revision 3, Veronica Belmont going to Mahalo, and Morgan Webb starting a new show. The most recent news of a web personality jumping ship is about Patrick Norton.
If your a Techtv fan like me, you’d remember Patrick being one half of the ScreenSavers, a popular tech show the he and Leo Laporte hosted. More recently Patrick co-hosted DLTV, a similar tech show, but shown online only. Last week Patrick left the show to be with his wife as they are about to have a child, but announced that he wouldn’t be returning to DLTV after the baby was born.
Where is Patrick Norton going?
Well that right now it’s a secret. He hasn’t said but I’m pretty sure that soon you’ll hear something. The first thing I thought was that he too was heading to Revision 3, and if you do a bit of searching you’ll notice others are thinking the same thing. If you listened to this weeks episode of Diggnation, they talk briefly about Patrick leaving towards the end of the show. listening to that has me just about convinced that he is going to Revision 3.
A little somewhat experimental idea of a search engine I talked about a while ago is getting a new employee. If you remember, a couple of weeks ago I talked about Mahalo.com, a search engine that have real people sifting all the garbage and spam from the web to bring you all relevant search results when you look for things. Today I read over at Crunch gear that the lovely Veronica Belmont will be leaving Cnet to join the cast over at Mahalo.
I admit, I only visit Cnet.com when I’m looking for information about different products. I love the video mini reviews they will often have on different gadgets etc. I do however listen to the Buzz out loud podcast pretty regularly. If you check my links page, you’ll find a link in the podcast section (congrats Molly). Thats where I know about Veronica, she co-host Buzz out loud along with Tom Merritt and Molly Wood.
For those that love hearing Veronica talk, don’t worry, according to her blogpost announcing her plans, she says something about doing a daily show over at Mahalo.com
I noticed something this week when I was listening to a couple of Podcast. Lots of the more popular tech podcasters live in either LA, San Diego, San Fran, or somewhere along what I would consider to be the tech area of the country. A lot of the tech news and info I hear in these podcast are based on what those people are experiencing every day.
For example, phones with Wi-fi access seems to be a big deal for those people. For me…not so much, the only Wi-Fi available to me (other than at home) is pretty much those places that have T-mobile hotspots….which you have to sign up and pay for. For the most part, other than at home, and the occasional unsecured wireless router, Wi-Fi is a non issue.
For those that don’t know, I live in Hampton Virginia. No its not a big city, but at the same time its not really the boondocks. The area is a pretty big metropolitan area, the biggest in the country that doesn’t have a professional sports team. I’m close to Virginia beach that gets plenty of visitors a year. Planes fly over my house every day on their way to Langley Air Force base. We have murder and crime just like any other decently sized city. And although we aren’t first to get all the new tech, we usually get it right there close to the beginning. I still remember the first time I heard about high speed internet (in PCworld magazine) I checked and Cox was making it available in my area in a couple of months (which of coarse I signed up).
My point is, a lot of the podcasters that live in the wonderful area of technological goodness sometimes forget that the rest of the country isn’t like LA. Some things that they think makes a certain product or technology the best there is, may not have any impact on many people listening.
Theres no Apple store near me.
Theres no Wi-Fi access points widely available to me.
I only have one choice of Cable internet and one choice of DSL provider.
Its not their fault, I don’t blame them or am I flaming them. The thing I have to do is just make sure when I am listening to these podcast and they are clamoring over something that just isn’t available in my area, to remember. Those features mean nothing to me, and if those features are the only thing that makes that product and/or service a "big deal" not to fall for their enthusiasm and buy it only to realize that I will never be able to take advantage of the things that silicon valley thinks are so great.
I usually promote my podcast and shownotes to the podcast over at Jonzee.com, but this week I talked about something that might be interesting to readers of this site. The reason? I talk about piecing together a gaming PC for cheap.
Do you want to build your very own Gaming PC for under $600 bucks?
Well that was the topic of episode 31 of the Jonzee.com Podcast. I don’t actually go through the details of building the system, but I talk about a potential set of components that you can use to build the system, where to get it, and how much they will cost. Don’t get me wrong, this is a cheap system, but aint no slouch. You’d beable to play all the latest games with pretty decent performance. All for less than $600 bucks.
Keep in mind though if you decide to follow through with the configuration I talk about in the podcast, this is all in theory and I haven’t actually built it myself, but I have used recent experience to gauge what type of performance you’d get with the configuration I have outlined.
If you want to subscribe to the Jonzee.com Podcast, theres a iTunes link over on the right sidebar, so feel free to check me out on a full time basis. but in the meantime, heres the audio below.
A few weeks ago, I recorded an interview with Kendall Shoenrock for the Jonzee.com Podcast. I published the episode with that interview last night. while I was waiting for the file to upload, I listened to it again myself. Ive done a few interviews before on my podcast, but most of them, we stuck to the topic of what the show was about. Kendall talked a little about himself and how he got into the whole tech web space, I was really impressed.
I’m a pretty fair guy, but I dont really get impressed too easily, thats not to say that Im a hater, I can and will appreciate when people are "doing things". I like to see that, and I will give you due propors (as Mc hammer use to say…hey where is he). But very few times will I finish talking to someone and think…"Hmm that was really impressive". What impresses me about Kendall, is how he managed to get started in some really big things when he was 22. At 22 I was still trying to…..well I guess I wont mention that here, but my idea of getting into big things didn’t fall into the same categories.
But to say the least, it was an interesting interview. check it out here
I usually don’t pay much attention to podcast made by "the establishment"….meaning commercial podcast or the like, but I made an exception the other day and subscribed to the Smodcast. What is the Smodcast you say? Well are you familiar with the movie Clerks? Clerks2? Jay and Silent Bob strikes back? This is a podcast created by the director and producer of those movies.
Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier gets together for about an hour an episode and dishes out more of that "witty" banter that we all know and love from all the Kevin Smith movies. I may sound a bit sarcastic with that last sentence, but honestly, I am a fan of his movies and I do like to hear those dialogs that are known to be thrown in throughout his flicks. I think I own every movie he has made on dvd except Jersey Girl.
But on to the podcast…or should I say Smodcast, If you are interested in giving it a listen, be advised that the language in the Smodcast is about what you would typically expect from Kevin smith. And Scott Mosier, who you normally don’t hear a lot from, adds in a good dose of humor himself.
What is it about?
Pretty much they talk about their past experiences, the topics are wildly varied. I have listened to all 9 episodes and have enjoyed them all…but like I say I am a fan.
