Are you scared to delete your Email?
I have to admit, I am scared to delete my email. Im not talking about just deleting individual email, or a spam item here and there. I’m talking about deleting my whole inbox and starting from scratch. I have several email addresses that I use for different things. Of coarse, I have the email address that is associated with this website. Then there’s the Jonzee.com email addy, There’s email I use for certain services etc.
For the last 3-4 years Ive been using one particular yahoo email address as my main personal email. I have Yahoo mail plus on that account so there are several “disposable” email addy’s included, several different folders that I use to filter the different “disposable” email from my regular email. To make a long story short, my personal email is a filtered, categorized well organized machine. I get rid of spam as it comes, anything that I wouldn’t want anyone else to read gets deleted after reading, important emails have a folder, work emails have a folder, family have a folder.
The problem is I have over 10,000 emails. About once a week I look at my inbox and think about wiping it all out. I know I’m not going to go through everything and try to make the number smaller selectively. The only thing I can think to do is just risk it all and delete it all.
But in that 10,000+ email, there is a lot of information that one day I might need. I couldn’t tell you how many times things have came up, and I was glad to be able to go back and look up the info I need in my email. As much space that is offered with a lot of these email services, Im not sure if deleting old email is really a big concern at all.

Don’t do it!!:) If you think you actually might need the emails in the future, just keep them.
That said, I went through and cleared my inbox to zero last year. It was very refreshing.

Clear junk emails and those that you will definitely not use in the future. Interesting post.

Yes that is the biggest thing. one can’t delete all the mails in the inbox and one can’t delete them as well.

I sort my email into folders, but keep my inbox only with to-do stuff. It’s the most organized way for me.

Thats the only thing I dont like about gmail, the fact that you cant create folders and organize everything. The funny thing is that they promote that as a good thing

Man, you gotta get rid of that backlog! Don’t let it grow for another year…

I have a 10 year old AOL account and I cannot believe how many times I have been glad that I did not delete so I could search it for one small scrap of info that I needed.

I know you pain brother!
I have over 11k of email… just when I will delete them is anybody’s guess… it’s useful though to keep them… you never know when you want to find that particular email address…

My suggestion to you is to go through one page at a time and delete what you think is not necessary. I have the same problem. I had over 6k messages just in one account. I want to delete it all, but I know there are valuable emails in the account that I would need or I might need. So over the weekend, while I was watching football, I sat and went through couple of pages. It was hard and annoying, but after each page, I felt this “high” of satisfaction because I now know that I won’t have to go back to those pages thinking if I need it or not. I KNOW!!
Hang in there. The more you think about it, the more stress. Go one page at a time and one day, you can check “this” off your bucketlist.

I’ve deleted my whole email a few times now. It doesn’t seem to be a good solution because you’ll make a new account and it will still keep piling up. I would say just keep doing what you are doing - weeding out spam and categorizing. Maybe make a second account that is only for things you deem important that you might need some day…and keep the rest categorized so you can go back whenever you want. I would start going through them for 10 minutes each day until you have only what you want. Good luck!

That *is* a huge volume of email - but with Yahoo!, MSN and Google constantly increasing the amount of free space provided, maybe it doesn’t matter? You can just keep it and use Search when you want to find something.
Another trick I’ve used in the past, is to sort by sender. There are many senders whose emails you just know you’re never going to need - automated emails, for example (especially those “limited-time deals”, etc.), so that you can just delete a whole bunch of them.
Unfortunately, you can only delete a page at a time, as far as I know, so until Yahoo! provides more tools, you can only do it slowly …
