Ramblings of an Urban Geek – Tech Enthusiast

A UPS device may just be a good thing to own.

You ever had things happen that feel like something is trying to tell you something? Today was one of those days for me, fet like somthing was telling me to buy a UPS. One thing I try to do is always have my electronics connected to surge protectors. I have a lot of electronics in my house. HDTV, Computers, DVD players, Xbox and Xbox 360, Notebook PC, 5.1 surround system. Many of the things I talk about over at Jonzee.com I actually have in one form or another at home.

Ive had things go bad due to electrical glitches. Back in the mid to late 90s there was a pretty big hurricane that pretty much put the whole Hampton roads area in the dark for a few days. luckily the building I lived in only went dark for a few hours. At that time I was heavy into playing Everquest. Well I was playing and during that day the power would go out for about 5 or 10 minutes then flip back on. One time the power went out, then flipped back on and I heard a pop and saw smoke coming from my PC. It fried my power supply. I have a microwave right now that have unreadable numbers due to similar power surges etc.

Well today I was sitting in the living room watching TV and browsing the net. The wind was blowing a little harder than normal and it looked like it was going to rain. Then it happened, the power went out. About 5 minutes later it came back on for a second and went out again. It then went on to repeat that about 2 more times when I finally went and turned off the main breaker in my house to keep from blowing something out. I was reading something online and figured that maybe I can hop on one of my neighbors WI-FI connections so that I can finish browsing the page I was reading. So I went to check the available Wi-Fi connection, which there are usually about 10, and Windows said there weren’t any connections. Thats when I looked outside and noticed the whole neighborhood was out of power.

I grabbed my MP3 player and figured Id go run some of the errands Ive been putting off. While driving I was listening to DLTV and what do you know, they are talking about uninteruptable power supplies (UPS systems).  Ive had conversations about UPS systems with a coworker, and last week I went to a local bargain (crap) store called Ollies and they had some for sale that I looked at for a few minutes.

But looking at what all happened today, and the feeling of “the force” leading me to by a UPS for my PC, I might just look into getting one.

  4. Yeah, a UPS system is the way to go if you are dependent upon computer or other machines as a vital part of your business. Better safe than sorry!
